Fresh analysis suggests that patients who discontinue blockbuster weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on reduced body mass far faster than those who halt conventional lifestyle programs.
Research printed in a prominent medical journal points out that while overweight people can lose a large proportion of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"Users using such treatments should be aware of the potential of quick weight regain when the therapy is stopped," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery means a return to starting weight within about a year and a half.
Analyzing Therapies
The research, which reviewed 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the effects of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.
Scientists point out that people who lose weight through diet and exercise usually have a more gradual weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
Understanding the Rapid Rebound
Doctors propose the way of the jabs explains the accelerated weight return.
GLP-1 drugs copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate appetite.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production may cause the system to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and may also lessen responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' means appetite is unsuppressed, making excessive eating a significant risk."
A Lifelong Disease?
The NHS advise the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals contend that, given the high risk of weight regain, the therapy should be considered life-long.
This perspective is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "highlight the long-term character of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.
User Experiences
Individuals who have stopped the medication describe a powerful return of hunger.
"It felt as if something flipping and I was suddenly extremely hungry," described an individual.
This challenge is exacerbated if users have not adopted sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.
Significant Interest
Recent estimates indicate that millions of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest continuing to grow.
- Use is greater among women than men.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
- A large proportion access the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
In conclusion, experts stress that while the jabs are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent fix and maintained weight loss relies on ongoing behavioural support.
