All Fans Are Invited to Be the Extra Haim Member.

"Do you know when you'll be chatting with the Haim sisters?" a text arrives. "My request was to ask if I can become their newest bandmate."

There is only one problem: I also desires to be the Haims' fourth member. And we're far from alone. Multiple famous admirers have also petitioned for the honor.

One thing is obvious an irresistible appeal is going on. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana launched their path performing shows at neighborhood delis with their family. Presently, they stand as repeated Grammy Award contenders.

Like all the most iconic groups, they're a tight-knit trio. Their videos often depict them walking in sync down the avenues of Los Angeles. During performances, they perform with such unfettered happiness you can't help but think, "I'd love to be a piece of that, too."

"The numerous instances on tour that audience members came up to us and said, 'Watching you live, I bought a guitar'," remarks Alana, the most junior of the Haim siblings. "That is the biggest honour. That is recognition in itself. We've done our job if we can motivate others to form a group."

"And thus all are welcome to be the honorary Haim sister."

Grammy Nod

The band have called into a break, where they're recovering after an lengthy tour in for their fourth album, I Quit.

They're right now celebrating the news it's been nominated for best rock album at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the pioneering all-female band ever in the running for the trophy.

"I tune into the nominations every year, so it kind of feels like The Truman Show when your name is called," explains Alana. "I needed to phone my sisters to say, 'Am I hearing this right or am I dreaming'?"

The significance of the accolade is deeply felt by the trio.

"We deliberately set out to make a guitar-driven album this time, so it's a huge step," says Alana. "But we're just thankful for the pioneers that paved the way."

Heartbreak and Laughter

The album emerged from a period of transition. All three sisters ended up single, and the music captures that strange in-between place where you're relieved to be free, but not yet ready to start anew.

The themes track departures and goodbyes. The sisters desire love, but not the specific love they've got. You can hear them determining in the moment who they want to be.

"I love description, yes," responds Danielle. "I Quit is kind of like a mantra. You have to consciously practice blocking the noise and saying, 'I couldn't care less what people think'."

Development of Music

That recent toughness demanded a new sound – more raw and immediate than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who helped produce the album, that began with the drum sound.

"Percussion is such a specific thing, and I care so much about it," she emphasizes.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the subject of our book," jokes Alana. "I've said it, our albums cannot begin until we find the right drum sound."

Stories and Shared Camaraderie

The trio's openness fueled the album's marketing, where the sisters disclosed some of their romantic tales.

Someone ended things with Este over a health concern. Alana shared a story of flying to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a casual gesture at midnight.

"During these setbacks, you just feel like there's no hope," says Alana. "Therefore to be able to find humor in those stories and have them tell you more outrageous stories, it's therapeutic."

A Confident Future

It's not difficult sense a evolution in the band. Now, Haim are more confident of their place in the music world.

They're major draws, with successful albums and an international fan base.

But Haim will always be their number one commitment.

"Me and my siblings have been playing music since I was little," shares Alana. "It's like nothing else that we were meant to do. And I'm really fortunate we've gotten here and we're still going strong."
